The Leadership Reality
Real estate leadership runs on two clocks. The assets move on capital cycles, rate shifts, and construction timelines nobody controls. The company moves on people, systems, and culture.
Most real estate leaders were trained for the first clock and promoted into the second. Add capital partners with their own return hurdles, thin margins that punish operational drift, and an industry that swings between boom and bust. The CEO job becomes a constant negotiation between what the deal needs and what the organization can actually deliver.
Where Leaders Get Stuck
- Growth outpacing the platform. Acquisitions close faster than property management, accounting, and leasing can absorb them, and service quality slips before anyone reports it.
- Capital partner strain. A JV or LP relationship tightens when performance misses the pro forma, and every update becomes a negotiation.
- From deal-maker to CEO. You built the company on your eye for deals. Now the job is building a team that executes without you in every decision.
- Ownership, management, and family overlap. In closely held and family firms, succession and authority get blurred, and the business pays for it.
Jon's Operating Perspective
Jon has worked in real estate since landing his first job in the industry in 1999. He came up on the multifamily development side at Trammell Crow Residential and Village Green, and today owns a portfolio of Chicago multifamily properties. Most recently he was CEO of a leading national single-family rental firm, scaling it from under 100 homes to more than 2,000 across nine offices. At peak the company acquired up to 100 homes a month, roughly $18M in monthly volume, through its acquisition in 2025.
He understands how capital partners think, what rapid acquisition growth does to an operations team, and how quickly culture fractures when acquisitions and operations stop trusting each other. As an attorney and trained mediator, he's comfortable in the room when partners disagree. His coaching connects operating mechanics and leadership, because in real estate the two are never separate.
